As Charlotte entered the 20th century, Morehead Street represented the southern boundary of the city. Close to the edge of the city were non-residential uses that needed inexpensive land: schools, factories, and cemeteries. The pre-Civil War era Carolina Military Institute, later the Mecklenburg Female Institute, was near present-day Morehead and Brevard streets.
Today, there are few historic buildings visible from the Morehead Street stop. Instead, there is the fantastic – and thoroughly modern vista presented by Center City Charlotte. As you travel through the underpass, look
to your left for the Charlotte Trolley Dragon.
From the Morehead Street stop it’s only a
short walk to Bank of America Stadium, home of
the Charlotte Panthers NFL football team.
The 73,250 seat, privately financed, open-air,
natural-grass stadium architecture contains many
unique elements such as massive archways and domed
towers at the entries, clad in building materials
that accent the Panthers black, blue and silver
team colors. A pair of black panthers, each measuring
eight-feet-tall, weighing more than 2,000 pounds,
perched on ten-foot pedestals and named Indomitable
Spirit, guard both sides of each of the three
80-foot arched entrances. The ornate, imposing
exterior is reminiscent of such notable landmarks
as Chicago's Soldier Field, the Los Angeles Coliseum
and Ohio State Stadium.
